WHERE I'M FROM
As the history of many farms goes, Misael Sauceda Olivera and his brothers each inherited a part of the land of their father, Porfirio Sauceda. Misael, however, was lucky enough to be the only brother with a passion for coffee. He was able to buy the lands from his brothers and gradually expand his own land. In the twelve years that the Cup of Excellence program has been running in Nicaragua, Misael’s La Divina Providencia made it to the international selection five times. With the money he received from these successes, he has been able to greatly improve his first farm – La Divina Providencia – and to buy a new farm, Santa Maria de Guadalupe.
Next to Caturra, Misael grows Maragogype and Maracaturra. All coffee is shade-grown under a canopy of native trees and fruit trees. His farm lies at an altitude around 1400 m.a.s.l. The average annual temperature at this altitude lies between 18 and 26°C. The environment in Las Manos in the Dipilto department is perfectly suited for growing coffee in proves to be ideal for growing delicate and subtle coffees with often floral higher notes and a substantial sweetness and body.
There’s a lot of excitement about the country’s young specialty coffee production. Until recently, farmers weren’t able to internationally sell their production as traceable single estate lots as all coffee was sold to big mills that prepared the coffee for export. Nowadays, the coffee industry is made up of big estates, cooperatives and farmer associations. These last two, accounting for about 95% of the country’s farmers, are taking their destiny in their own hands by putting great emphasis on quality and by aiming at the international specialty coffee industry.
